2011 Winter Hair Colors

All the winter colors this year seem to be variations of brunette. Warm, cool, light, dark – doesn’t matter. Brown can be a yummy color to wear and adding those color molecules to your hair will make it look healthier and more vibrant. The perfect solution to winter blahs is to freshen up your existing color or go for an entirely new shade!

A lighter shade of brown can be fun to play with because the highlights and lowlights are typically easier to see and appreciate. Having a few foils tossed in while your hair is processing helps to break up the color and add dimension. Instead of a neutral brunette level 6, you end up with that shade of brown plus a blonde and darker brown color mixed in. It’s subtle and pretty.

If you don’t want to or can’t afford the extra color in the foils, ask your colorist for a spicier all-over shade of brown. By adding a little red or copper or violet, they can substantially change the outcome. Keep in mind that reds have a tendency to fade a little faster when selecting the color you want.

Color blocking certainly isn’t a new technique, and if it’s done wrong or with the wrong shades, it can look dated. Ask your stylist for examples if you think this is something you’d like to do. Having a chocolate cherry color with a more vibrant shade of red blocked in can be really gorgeous. The way your stylist places the foil will determine where the block of color will go so make sure to talk to them in advance about what you expect the end result to be. If you want it to peek through the top layers without being obvious, make sure to tell them that. If you want it directly on top, tell them. It’s much easier for your stylist to have those questions answered than to have to go back and do color correction or other treatment to achieve your look (and cheaper for you!). Be specific!

Reese Witherspoon and Julia Roberts are two of Hollywood’s most influential and stylish women, but if you look closely at their hair you’ll notice they both have very understated colors. There’s no obvious highlighting or other streaks visible. Reese even has a decent amount of re-growth. What they do have is softly styled clean hair which more than makes up for what they lack in color variation. Not all hair color has to be fancy. It can be simple and still be beautiful. Using products that provide the right combinations of ingredients for your hair type is key to keeping your hair looking trendy instead of tragic this winter season. You don’t have to go brunette. You don’t have to go blonde. Just keep in mind that the trend is a rich color that is clean, soft, subtle, sexy, touchable and a little more on the natural side but still with a little bit of mystery, and you’ll have the best winter yet!
